Let’s take a break from my travelogue up north and have a stop over with these mouth watering street foods the world has to offer. I’m a big fan of street foods since I was a kid, even though mommy won’t permit me to eat, dad is always there to back me up whenever I craved for those barbeque, isaw and etcetera. I can distinctly remember dad sneaking away when mom’s not around just to buy me fish balls and barbeque with tons of sauce that goes along with it. Because dad strongly believes in the statement, “You only live once, might as well try eating everything good.” Fast forward 5 years from now, my taste palate craved for more street foods; but not just Pinoy street food. Street foods from all over the world such as Indonesia, Brazil, Japan and many more! I bet you did too.
Since my wallet won’t allow me to travel overseas and taste other countries street food, Vikings Luxury Buffet finally brought some of the world’s best street food just within reach for the whole month of August during weekends only. Just a week ago, Vikings invited me and other bloggers from different niche to get first dibs on what’s new in the menu for Vikings! And it’s unlimited guys, can you not? Here are some of my personal favorites and a little bit of info about them from the Chef of Vikings herself:
First on Vikings’ list of World Street Food is from the land of the rising sun – ‘Gyoza’, It’s a no brainer that Gyoza is Japan’s most popular street food since it’s an on the go meal which you can enjoy every single time. I kid you not, I can eat Gyoza for the whole day and never complain. Basically, Gyoza (餃子, gyōza) are dumplings filled with ground meat and vegetables and wrapped in a thin dough. Also known as pot stickers, gyoza originated in China (where they are called jiaozi), but have become a very popular dish in Japan. The typical gyoza filling consists of ground pork, nira chives, green onion, cabbage, ginger, garlic, soy sauce and sesame oil, but some creative gyoza shops have also come up with a range of other fillings.
Next on the list is Suppli, this is an italian snack that consist of a ball of rice (generally Risotto) tomato sauce and raw egg which is typical for the roman cuisine. Originally, they were filled with chicken giblets, mincemeat or provatura, now also with piece of mozzarella; the whole morsel is soaked in egg and coated with breadcrumbs and then fried (usually deep-fried). The dish is native to Rome from the region of Lazio in Italy.
PORK SATAY (INDONESIA)
Satay is a modern indonesian and malay spelling of Sate, is a dish of seasoned, skewered and grilled meat, served with sauce. Satay may consist of diced or sliced chicken, beef, pork, fish or depending to your like. The authentic version though uses skewers from the midrib of the coconut palm frond, although bamboo skewers are often used. Satay originated in Java, Indonesia. It is no doubt have become the national dish in Indonesia and now my new personal favorite because of it’s kare-kare like sauce with a hint of curry in it. Even the thought of it makes me wanna go to Vikings and grab a plate full of these.
ROU JIA MO (CHINA)
This is sometomes spelled as roujiamo meaning “meat burger” or “meat sandwhich”, is a street food originated from Shaanxi Province and now widely consumed all over china. The meat is commonly pork stewed for hours in a soup containing over 20 spices and seasonings.
Espetinho is a portuguese word which means “Little Skewer” and is the word that Brazilians use to describe what is know in English as kebab and can be made from many things. The common are simple skewers of spiced beef or chicken. There are other varieties of espetinho, however, made from sausage or hotdogs, from shrimps or cubed fish, or even queijo coalho, a Brazilian cheese that doesn’t melt and so can be grilled.
TACOS AL PASTOR (MEXICO)
Now I bring you to Mexico! Just the thought of Mexico a burst of tacos, quesadillas and burritos exploded in my head. Got to try this new favorite, Al pastor (from spanish word, shepherd) is a dish developed in central Mexico, likely as the adoption from shawarma spit grilled meat brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico. Tacos Al Pastor are made from thin strips of pork that have been marinated in spices and chiles and then stacked onto a long spit called trompo.
JERK CHICKEN (JAMAICA)
Last in my favorite list is from Jamaica. Jerk is a type of cooking native chicken to Jamaica in which the meat is dry-rubbed or wet marinated with a very hot spice mixture called Jamaican Jerk Spice. Jerk Seasoning is traditionally applied to pork and chicken. Jerk seasoning principally relies upon two items: allspice (called “pimento” in Jamaica) and Scotch Bonnet peppers. Yum!
